Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is a learner-based, curriculum-driven, experiential education approach that involves working with horses to support individual and group development.
Participants engage in structured, objective-based activities alongside horses to build self-awareness, confidence, communication skills, and personal responsibility, among other essential life skills. Learning happens through experience, reflection, and interaction rather than talk-based instruction.
This work is:
Ground-based (no horseback riding involved)
Experiential and learner-led, allowing insight through participation
Curriculum-informed and outcome-focused
Facilitated by a certified Equine Assisted Learning practitioner
Designed to support emotional, cognitive, and behavioural development
Designed to support self-awareness, responsibility, confidence, and forward movement
How Equine Assisted Learning Works:
Through guided, hands-on exercises with horses, participants naturally encounter real-time feedback, challenges, and opportunities for growth. Horses respond honestly to human behaviour, energy, and intention, creating powerful learning moments that help participants:
Build self-confidence through validated experience
Develop communication and teamwork skills
Increase emotional regulation and grounding
Strengthen problem-solving and decision-making abilities
The learning environment is engaging, safe, and respectful, allowing participants to discover insights for themselves rather than being told what to change.
Why organizations choose Equine Assisted Learning:
Equine Assisted Learning has been shown to be:
Effective and engaging for individuals who struggle in traditional settings
Especially impactful for those who benefit from experiential, nature-based learning
A positive, educational, and creative approach to personal and group development
This approach does not focus on fixing people. It supports participants in discovering their own capacity for growth, insight, and change.
*Important Clarification:
Equine Assisted Learning is not therapy and does not involve riding or horsemanship instruction. It is an educational and developmental approach that complements existing supports by offering an alternative way to learn, reflect, and grow.
Organizations often report a combination of personal, social, and learning-based outcomes, including:
Increased engagement and willingness to participate, especially among individuals who struggle in traditional or talk-based settings
Improved self-awareness and self-esteem as participants begin to recognize their own strengths, choices, and impact
Greater emotional regulation, grounding, and ability to stay present during challenges
Stronger communication skills, including listening, boundaries, and respectful interaction with others
Increased accountability, responsibility, and ownership of personal actions and decisions
Improved problem-solving and decision-making through hands-on, experiential activities
Enhanced teamwork and cooperation when programs are delivered in group settings
A greater sense of purpose, confidence, and forward momentum
Many organizations also note that participants who are resistant, disengaged, or shut down in conventional environments often show increased openness and participation in Equine Assisted Learning settings.
Outcomes vary based on participant needs, group dynamics, and program length, and are supported through structured, objective-driven experiences rather than talk-based instruction.
We offer a unique Equine Assisted Learning experience that is currently the only curriculum-driven program of its kind in the Grande Prairie region.
Our work is intentionally designed to bridge education, experiential learning, and human development in a way traditional programs cannot.
We combine:
Certified Equine Assisted Learning facilitation, ensuring ethical, structured, and professional delivery
Curriculum-driven programming with clear objectives and outcomes, not unstructured activities
A strong foundation in education and special education, allowing programs to support diverse learning styles and needs
A safe, respectful, and non-judgmental environment where participants are met exactly where they are
Horses as active teachers, responding honestly and in real time to human behaviour, intention, and communication
Unlike talk-based or classroom settings, learning happens through direct experience. Participants are not told what to change; they discover it themselves through guided interaction, reflection, and hands-on engagement.
This approach is especially effective for individuals who struggle with traditional systems, as it fosters:
Personal responsibility
Authentic self-awareness
Confidence built through real experience
Meaningful behavioural insight
Our programs do not aim to fix or label individuals. Instead, they create a space where learning, growth, life skills, and forward movement can naturally occur.
The first step is a conversation. We discuss:
Your organization’s goals
The population you serve
Desired outcomes
Program length and structure
From there, a tailored plan is created. Please connect with us if you'd like to set up a meeting.
In a horse’s world, everything is clear and straightforward. Communication is honest, immediate, and consistent. Horses live by simple rules, and when those rules are challenged, they respond clearly and without judgment.
As prey animals, horses are highly attuned to their environment. Their survival depends on awareness, which means they notice subtle shifts in energy, body language, intention, and emotional state. They respond not to what we say, but to how we show up.
Horses can sense the difference between calm and anxiety, confidence and uncertainty, alignment and inconsistency. When a person’s thoughts, emotions, and actions are not aligned, horses respond in ways that make this visible in real time.
This creates powerful learning opportunities. Participants are able to see, feel, and experience the impact of their internal state and external behaviour without criticism or labels. With guidance, they learn how small shifts in awareness, intention, and behaviour lead to different outcomes.
By understanding how horses naturally think and respond, participants become empowered to make changes in how they show up in their own lives, relationships, and decision-making.
Programs are intentionally small to ensure safety and meaningful engagement. With two horses, typical group sizes range from 4 to 8 participants per session.
Programs are offered in:
8-week or 12-week formats
Small groups (typically 4–8 participants)
Sessions designed to build progressively over time
Custom programming may be available based on organizational needs. Please contact us to learn more.
Programs are delivered:
Outdoors on private property near Grande Prairie, Alberta
As mobile programs when appropriate and feasible
All sessions prioritize safety, clarity, and participant comfort.
No, this is not a horseback riding program. Our programs are all done on the ground alongside the horse, there is no horseback riding involved.
No, and that’s what makes it so unique. This isn’t therapy. It does not replace clinical or medical services. This is life skills development. You won’t be asked to talk through your past or label your experiences. Instead, the horse and facilitator help guide you to your own insight through real, in-the-moment learning. Many people do find it deeply therapeutic, but the transformation comes from your own inner discoveries, not from being told what to do.
It is an alternative learning and development approach that complements existing supports by helping participants engage, reflect, and build skills through experience.
*Note: Our programs can pair beautifully with other therapeutic supports if you’re working with a professional, but they stand strong on their own. It’s a natural fit offering clients a powerful, hands-on way to apply what the skills they’ve been working on.
